Castaic Lake draws boaters from all over the greater Los Angeles area. Water skiers, wakeboarders, jet skiers, and pleasure cruisers flock to the lake during the summer months and on hot fall weekends.

Opening and closing times of the lake change as often as every two weeks. In the summer the lake opens at 5:45 or 6:00 AM and closes at 8:00 or 7:45 PM. Boats must be out of the water by closing time.

Castaic Lake Quagga and Zebra Mussels Boat Inspections

All boats must undergo a mandatory inspection. This inspection is to prevent the spread of Quagga and Zebra Mussels. All vessels must be clean, drained, and dry prior to entering Castaic Lake.

Boating Regulations

  • All boats must be off the lake and on their trailers by the lake closing time.
  • Watercraft may only be launched from designated launch areas.
  • Boat passengers may not ride on the bow.
  • The speed limit for all watercraft on Castaic Lake is 35 MPH. The speed limit in coves and near the launch ramp is 5 MPH.
  • Alcohol consumption is prohibited.
  • Waterskiing and Wakeboarding must be done in designated areas. See lake map.
  • All boats travel in a counter-clockwise direction.
  • Fueling a vessel on the water is not permitted.
  • All boats travel in a counter-clockwise direction.
  • Personal watercraft may not tow anything. Once launched they must go directly to their designated area at 5 MPH. Other than coming and going, personal watercraft must stay within their designated area.

Lagoon Boating Regulations

  • Windsurfers may only have one person.
  • No gasoline powered engines may be used on the lagoon.
  • Vessels in the lagoon must be powered by sail, by hand, or by electric motors.
  • Float Tubes may only be used in the lagoon. Users of float tubes must display launch permits, wear PFDs, and display a 12" orange square on the back of the float tube.

Kayaking and Paddle-boarding at Castaic Lake

The County of Los Angeles rents sit-on-top tandem kayaks for use at Castaic Lake's Lagoon. The kayaks are offered at hourly or all day rental rates from 11 AM to 5 PM on weekends and holidays.

Reservations for a kayak can be made Monday through Friday by calling (661) 257-4050 at least 2 days before your rental date. You may also make reservations online: Activities Reservation System


Kayak and Paddle Board Instruction at Castaic Lake

Kayak and Paddleboard instruction is offered by park staff at Paradise Cove at Castaic Lake's Lagoon on summer Saturdays.

Kayak or Paddleboard Clinics: 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM and 10:15 AM - 11:15 AM

At the informal paddle sessions you will learn kayaking or stand-up paddle boarding and have a chance to practice your skills. Participants will be introduced to basic kayaking or paddling techniques and kayaking or paddleboard safety. All the necessary equipment is provided.

You must be at least 18 years old to register but children 8 and older may register with a registered parent or guardian.
$20 per session.
