Mono Lake Boating

Mono Lake is open to all kinds of boating - motorized and non-motorized, but a number of restrictions and cautions should be noted.

A good source of information is the Boating on Mono Lake guide provided by the Mono Lake Committee.

Mono Lake Boating Rules and Guidelines

  1. Island Closures - Islands and water within one mile of the islands are closed from April 1 to August 1 to protect nesting birds.
  2. Camping - Camping is allowed by boaters and backpackers along the shore of Mono Lake above the exposed lake bed.
  3. Dangerous Winds - High winds come up every afternoon and create serious dangers to boaters. Wear life jackets, be off the lake by noon, carry survival gear and water, never begin a trip when the wind is blowing.
  4. Cell Phones - Cell phones do not work from every location on the lake or shore.
  5. Tufa - It is illegal to damage tufa. Avoid tufa towers and watch for underwater towers.
  6. Birds - Stay at least 200 yards from Osprey nests and 100 yards from congregations of migratory birds. Avoid creek deltas when birds are present.
  7. Mono Lake is not suitable for speed boats or personal watercraft because the water is very salty and alkaline and also because of numerous submerged obstacles.
